Welcome...
The
Sutherland Shire, a showcase of Australia’s indigenous people, European
settlement history and heritage, culture and modern lifestyle, is just 30
minutes south of Sydney’s CBD.

Known as the Birth Place of Modern
Australia due to the landing of Captain James Cook
in 1770 on its shores, the Sutherland Shire can lay claim to
one of Australias most significant meetings between
Europeans and the lands indigenous people.
Well
before the British had discovered Australia in 1770,
indigenous people lived here for between 50 and 60,000
years. Over the continent there were many different language
and tribal groups. The original residents of the Sutherland
Shire were the people of the Dharawal Nation. Once the
Europeans began to arrive, life in this land changed
dramatically for the indigenous people with the introduction
of new diseases and the removal from their lands.
Today the Sutherland Shire is a modern lifestyle centre
with festivals and events, dining experiences from around
the World, entertainment and wide range of recreational
activities available in its marvellous bushland, beaches and
waterways.
